Laser Recovery & CO₂ Aftercare Guide

Laser Recovery & Physician-Guided Skin Care

Post-Laser Skin Care After CO₂, CoolPeel®, IPL & Microneedling.

The right post-laser routine can improve comfort, reduce dryness, support the skin barrier, calm visible redness, and help protect your results after fractional CO₂ resurfacing, CoolPeel®, IPL photofacial treatments, microneedling, and combination laser procedures.

This guide explains what to expect during recovery, how healing usually progresses, what products may be recommended, and how to use your CO₂ recovery products day by day.

Why Aftercare Matters

Laser recovery is about more than waiting for redness to fade.

After fractional CO₂ laser resurfacing, CoolPeel®, IPL, or microneedling, the skin barrier may be temporarily more sensitive. Proper aftercare helps protect the skin, reduce irritation, maintain hydration, and lower the risk of prolonged redness or post-inflammatory discoloration.

Barrier Support

Gentle cleansing and hydration help reduce tightness, dryness, and irritation while the skin repairs.

Redness & Comfort

Calming ingredients such as niacinamide, aloe, green tea, and white tea may help reduce the appearance of redness.

Pigment Protection

Daily mineral sunscreen and pigment-support ingredients such as tranexamic acid can be helpful for patients prone to dark spots or melasma.

What To Expect

Common healing changes after fractional CO₂ laser treatment.

Modern fractional CO₂ resurfacing is designed to create controlled fractional resurfacing rather than a traditional fully ablative peel. Most patients are red for several days, then develop a rough “sandpaper” texture as treated surface cells exfoliate.

Common Early Symptoms

  • Redness for several days
  • Mild to moderate swelling
  • Warmth or tightness
  • Rough or “sandpaper” texture
  • Tiny dark dots or bronzing
  • Gradual flaking or peeling

Most Patients Do Not Develop

  • Large sheets of peeling skin
  • Significant oozing
  • Raw open areas
  • Heavy crusting

Results Build Over Time

Early improvement in brightness and texture may appear within 1–2 weeks, while collagen remodeling and continued smoothing can improve for several months.

CO₂ Recovery Products

Products used in the CO₂ recovery routine.

Your provider may adjust your routine depending on treatment intensity, skin type, and sensitivity. The standard CO₂ recovery kit includes the following products:

Renewing Cucumber Cleanser

Gentle cleansing 2 times daily with cool or lukewarm water. Pat dry. Do not scrub.

Revitalisant Hydrating Cream

Moisturizer used throughout recovery to support hydration and barrier repair.

Fresh Tea Toner

Added after the first day to calm redness, hydrate, and provide antioxidant support.

Niacinamide 10%

Added during recovery, usually diluted 1:4 with moisturizer at first to reduce stinging and support barrier repair.

Tranexamic Acid

Introduced as skin calms to support even tone and help reduce the appearance of post-inflammatory discoloration.

Valtrex + Hydrocortisone 2.5%

Prescription medications are used as directed. Valtrex typically begins the day before treatment. Hydrocortisone is used on treatment day only unless otherwise directed.

Recovery Timeline

Day-by-day CO₂ laser recovery instructions.

This timeline is based on our standard fractional CO₂ recovery protocol. For this guide, Day 1 is the day of your laser treatment. Your provider may modify these instructions depending on your treatment depth, skin sensitivity, and medical history.

Before TreatmentDay Before CO₂ Laser

  • Begin Valtrex as prescribed.
  • Pick up hydrocortisone 2.5% if prescribed.
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning.
  • Have your recovery products ready at home.
Products: Valtrex, hydrocortisone 2.5%, Renewing Cucumber Cleanser, Revitalisant Hydrating Cream, Fresh Tea Toner, Niacinamide 10%, Tranexamic Acid.

Treatment DayDay 1: Calm Heat & Protect

  • Expect redness, warmth, swelling, tightness, or a mild burning sensation.
  • Continue Valtrex as directed.

  • Add Fresh Tea Toner for comfort, hydration, and antioxidant support.
  • Allow toner to fully absorb before applying the rest of your regimen.
  • Add Niacinamide 10% diluted 1:4 with Revitalisant Hydrating Cream.
How to dilute niacinamide: mix about 1 part Niacinamide 10% with 4 parts moisturizer before applying.

Rebuilding PhaseDays 5–7: Pink Skin, Flaking & SPF

  • Rough texture should begin improving.
  • Peeling or flaking may continue.
  • Fresh pink skin becomes more visible.
  • Swelling usually improves significantly.
  • Continue Valtrex through day 7 unless otherwise directed.
  • Add Tranexamic Acid (TXA).

Morning: Renewing Cucumber Cleanser → Fresh Tea Toner → Tranexamic Acid (TXA) → Niacinamide 10% cut with Revitalisant Hydrating Cream → Mineral Sunscreen.

Evening: Renewing Cucumber Cleanser → Fresh Tea Toner → Tranexamic Acid (TXA) → Niacinamide 10% cut with Revitalisant Hydrating Cream.

Weeks 2–4Maintain, Protect & Resume Gradually

  • Pinkness gradually fades.
  • Texture continues improving.
  • Collagen remodeling continues beneath the surface.
  • Discontinue Valtrex after day 7 unless otherwise directed.
  • Continue your skincare regimen.
  • Continue mineral sunscreen.
  • Resume exercise gradually once cleared by your provider.
  • Makeup may resume once approved by your provider.

What To Avoid

Avoid irritation while the skin barrier is recovering.

Avoiding irritation is just as important as applying the right products. The goal is calm, protected, well-hydrated skin.

Avoid These Early

  • Retinol or tretinoin
  • Glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid
  • Scrubs and exfoliating brushes
  • Picking or peeling skin
  • Hot yoga, saunas, and steam
  • Direct sun exposure
  • Heavy makeup before the skin is healed

Sunscreen Is Critical

Mineral sunscreen is one of the most important parts of laser recovery. It helps reduce the risk of persistent redness, discoloration, and pigment rebound.

Do Not Over-Occlude

A very thin layer of Aquaphor may be used early if directed, but over-applying ointment can trap heat and prolong redness.

Laser Recovery FAQ

Why does my skin feel rough or like sandpaper after CO₂ laser?

A rough or sandpaper-like texture is common after fractional CO₂ laser treatment. It usually represents treated surface skin exfoliating gradually as new skin heals underneath.

Is it normal if I do not peel in sheets after laser resurfacing?

Yes. Many modern fractional CO₂ and CoolPeel® treatments create fine exfoliation rather than dramatic sheets of peeling. More peeling does not always mean a better result.

When do I use Aquaphor after CO₂ laser?

Aquaphor is typically used only on treatment day as a very thin layer if directed. The skin should look lightly moisturized, not greasy. Over-applying ointment may trap heat and prolong redness.

When do I stop hydrocortisone after CO₂ laser?

Hydrocortisone 2.5% is generally used as a thin layer 3 times daily on treatment day only, unless your provider gives different instructions.

When can I use Fresh Tea Facial Toner after laser treatment?

Fresh Tea Facial Toner is usually added around days 2–4 to support comfort, hydration, and redness control. Let it fully absorb before applying moisturizer or other products.

When can I use niacinamide after laser treatment?

Niacinamide can be helpful for redness, hydration, and barrier support, but higher-strength formulas may sting early. Many patients use 10% niacinamide diluted 1:4 with moisturizer once the skin is comfortable.

Can tranexamic acid help after laser treatments?

Tranexamic acid may help support a more even-looking complexion and reduce the appearance of post-inflammatory pigmentation, especially in patients prone to discoloration or melasma.

When can I restart retinol after laser resurfacing?

Most patients wait until the skin is no longer peeling, irritated, or sensitive. This is often around 5–7 days for lighter treatments, but longer for more aggressive resurfacing. Restart only when cleared by your provider.

How long does redness last after fractional CO₂ laser?

Redness varies by treatment intensity and skin type. Many patients are red for several days and then transition to pinkness, which gradually fades as the skin barrier recovers.

When can I wear makeup after laser treatment?

Makeup is usually delayed until the skin surface is healed and no longer raw, oozing, or actively peeling. Your provider will give specific instructions based on your treatment.

What is the most important thing after laser treatment?

Gentle skin care and sun protection are the foundation of recovery. Hydration, barrier support, avoiding irritation, and daily mineral SPF 50 are essential.
