Liposuction Video Q&A
Can liposuction tighten loose skin?
Dr. David Tauber explains what liposuction can—and cannot—do when loose abdominal skin is part of the concern.
Treatment Areas
Abdominal and Waist Liposuction — CoreComplete 1™
Focused liposuction contours the abdomen and waist as one connected region, with attention to waist definition and smooth transitions. Within our CoreComplete™ approach, this is CoreComplete 1: fat reduction without skin removal or abdominal-wall plication.
Liposuction does not correct stretch marks or muscle separation. If loose skin or abdominal overhang is the main concern, compare mini, full, and extended tummy tuck options; muscle repair is a separate decision when weakness or separation contributes to bulging. Lipo 360 extends treatment around the torso to the flanks and back.
Arms, thighs, back, chest, and other localized areas
Treatment may also address upper-arm fullness, inner or outer thighs, hips, knees, isolated back or bra-roll fullness, and selected neck or jawline concerns. The amount and distribution of fat and the skin’s ability to retract determine whether liposuction alone is appropriate.
Tumescent Power-Assisted Liposuction
Dr. Tauber performs power-assisted liposuction, or PAL, using a tumescent technique. The procedure is planned around the treatment area, fat distribution, surrounding contours, skin quality, and the amount of reduction needed for a balanced result.
Tumescent fluid containing local anesthetic and medication is placed in the treatment area to help reduce bleeding and discomfort. A vibrating power-assisted cannula is then used to remove fat in a controlled way and refine the transition between treated and untreated areas.
Laser-assisted liposuction, sometimes marketed as SmartLipo, uses laser energy before fat removal. Energy-based techniques can add risks, including burns or fluid collections. Read our comparison of laser and tumescent liposuction for more on the differences.
Is Liposuction the Right Procedure for You?
Liposuction may be a good option if you are close to a stable weight but have specific areas of fat that do not respond well to diet or exercise. It is not a substitute for weight loss and it does not reliably tighten loose skin.
You may be a candidate for liposuction if:
- You want to reduce localized abdominal or waist fat, saddlebags, bra-roll fullness, upper-arm fullness, or another disproportionate fat deposit.
- Your weight is reasonably stable and your expectations are realistic.
- Your skin has enough elasticity to contract after fat reduction.
If loose skin, muscle separation, or abdominal overhang is the main concern, a tummy tuck or a combined body contouring plan may be more appropriate.
Risk Transparency
Liposuction Risks and Recovery
All surgery has risks. Liposuction risks can include bruising, swelling, contour irregularity, numbness, asymmetry, fluid collections, infection, bleeding, skin laxity, and the need for revision surgery.
Most patients wear compression after surgery. Many return to light activity within several days, depending on the areas treated, extent of surgery, and their surgeon’s instructions. Swelling improves over time, but final contour can take months to settle.
What If My Results Need Fine-Tuning?
Even with careful surgical planning and meticulous technique, healing varies from person to person, and occasionally a result may benefit from additional refinement. We believe that caring for our patients extends beyond the initial procedure.
When a revision of our own surgical work is appropriate, we typically waive the surgeon’s fee. Many minor refinements can be performed in our office without additional facility or anesthesia charges. If a revision requires an operating room, patients are generally responsible only for the associated facility and anesthesia fees.
Our goal is to work closely with every patient throughout recovery and make reasonable efforts to achieve the best possible result.
Clear, Honest Guidance
Liposuction FAQ: Common Patient Questions
Are liposuction results permanent?
Fat reduction is long lasting, but remaining cells can enlarge with weight gain. Stable weight helps maintain the result.
How much does targeted liposuction cost in Albany, NY?
Treatment extent, complexity, anesthesia, and combined surgery affect the quote. Review the current pricing guide and request a written estimate for your treatment plan.
Does abdominal liposuction include the back?
Focused abdominal and waist liposuction is planned for the front and waistline. Lipo 360 extends circumferential treatment to the flanks and back; your quote should specify the areas included.
Can arm liposuction replace an arm lift?
It may help when fat is the main issue and skin can retract. Hanging skin may require an arm lift instead.
Why not remove as much fat as possible?
Removing too much fat can create contour irregularities. A balanced result requires attention to the remaining fat layer and transitions between treated and untreated areas.
When is the final result clear?
Early swelling can hide the change. The contour settles over months, with follow-up used to assess healing and remaining concerns.
What happens if I need a revision after surgery?
Occasionally, a surgical result may benefit from fine-tuning after healing is complete. When a revision of our own work is appropriate, we typically waive the surgeon’s fee. Many refinements can be performed in the office; operating-room revisions generally involve facility and anesthesia fees.
